Amos eager to stake his claim for 15 jersey

- By JAMES CANDY

HALLAM Amos is hoping his new beginnings for club and country kickstart his international career.

The dynamic back-three operator moved down the M4 motorway to the Cardiff Blues this season after eight seasons with the Dragons in a bid to impress new Wales head coach Wayne Pivac.

And he has revealed his move was motivated by a desire to establish himself as a major rival to Liam Williams and Leigh Halfpenny for the Wales No.15 jersey.

Amos, below, said: “Over the last few seasons with the Dragons it’s been difficult with the results, so hopefully here we can win a few more games.

“Personally, I want to be playing at full-back so hopefully I will get a run in the 15 jersey.

“I’ve had discussions with Wayne, he was keeping his cards close to his chest the last time but I imagine full-back is where they see me long term, that’s what Gats always said and I can’t imagine the thinking has changed.

“It will be a clean slate for a lot of the boys, two of the regions and the national team have new coaches so it will be interesting to see what happens.”

Amos blew three try scoring opportunities in a World Cup nightmare against Uruguay, but recovered to impress in the bronze final defeat to the All Blacks alongside new Blues back-three colleagues Josh Adams and Owen Lane.

And he believes the attacking trio can terrorise defences together after passing the ultimate test against New Zealand.

“Hopefully we get a few more run outs together as a back three in the Blues shirt this year,” Amos added. “We’ve got real strength in the back three. It will be exciting, I thought we went well against the All Blacks and you don’t get many greater challenges than that.”
