Defiant Lucs give Tigers shock mauling
Luctonians .... 22 Sedgley Park 13
LUCTONIANS edged past high-flying Sedgley Park with an impressive performance at Mortimer Park.
It was a dominant display from the hosts from the outset, as Sedgley kicked off and did not touch the ball again until they restarted after five minutes.
Luctonians showed great character to play into the wind and drove Sedgley back relentlessly, allowing their forwards to set up Drew Cheshire who crossed with ease.
But Matthew Gallagher then capitalised on a loose Lucs kick, allowing the away side to get back into the contest.
And when Collins added a penalty on 32 minutes the visitors looked well placed going into half-time.
However, Lucs’ second half saw them deservedly secure the result with a very intelligent and managed performance in atrocious conditions.
They were rewarded from an excellent kick and chase by Seb Robinson, who was held back over the line. And referee Iain Kiy had no choice other than to
award a penalty try, giving the Black and Whites a valuable lead they would not relinquish.
Josh Watkins was unfortunate not to score almost straight from the restart when he chased another kick through but was adjudged to be in front of the kicker after touching down.
Lucs kept driving forward and were rewarded with their second when the hard-working Callum Young was driven over from a maul to increase the home side’s advantage as the clock ticked down towards the final whistle.
The hosts continued to defend superbly and also crafted a series of late opportunities, holding on to secure an important triumph to the delight of the home crowd.
