Captain Morgan puts full focus on Scarlets

- ■ By STEFFAN THOMAS

JAC Morgan is determined to use his experiences as Wales U20 captain to help establish himself in the Scarlets squad having recently decided to focus on rugby full time rather than alongside his apprenticeship as a mechanical engineer.

The 19-year-old back row,

below, is highly rated by current Scarlets head coach Brad Mooar, who identified the Brynamman man as a star of the future.

Wales’ junior Six Nations campaign has proved difficult with defeats against Italy and Ireland before a terrific victory over France, but Morgan has been a standout figure throughout.

“I’ve found this campaign good in terms of the captaincy,” Morgan told

The Rugby Paper. “Being given more responsibility has helped me grow as a player. I’m not the type of captain that likes to scream and shout. I’d rather lead by example on the pitch.

“It’s been great being involved in the senior squad at the Scarlets and there are great players to learn from like Uzair Cassiem, James Davies and Aaron Shingler.

“Picking up tips from them is very important and hopefully I can carry on learning from them and some of the other experienced players in the squad.

“I’ve had some game time this season, which has been good for my development, and now I just want to keep working hard in training and get more opportunities to show what I can do.”

Only recently Morgan decided to focus solely in rugby. He added: “I am now full time with the Scarlets. I used to have an apprenticeship in Llansamlet as a mechanical engineer at the same time as playing for Aberavon in the Premiership.

“I’ll try and get my qualifications and get back into education next year to pick that back up. I want to play at as high a level as possible, but a big goal of mine is just to enjoy rugby while I’m able to play it.”
