Classy Cleall leads the charge

- By ADAM ELLIS

A POWERFUL display from the Saracens pack ensured victory over valiant Worcester.

England second row Poppy Cleall was at the heart of the effort for Saracens, but credit must go to Warriors who had been steamrolled 55-3 in the corresponding fixture last season.

Warriors made it a fierce contest for the first hour. Forced to defend for long periods, Warriors withstood a series of attacking lineouts with the boot of fly-half Sarah Nicholas relieving pressure.

It was from one of Nicholas’ kicks that Brooke Bradley was able to break down the blindside and force Saracens into a penalty, which Robyn Wilkins slotted.

The response by Saracens was immediate. The powerful Cleall took the ball up to the line and after two quick phases, got her hands on it again to score.

A Carys Cox try restored Worcester’s lead, but Saracens again hit back with a try from May Campbell.

Worcester wing Zoe Heely put the Wariors ahead once more only for Rocky Clark to respond for Saracens.

A lengthy delay due to an injury to Warriors No.8 Sioned Harries gave the teams respite from the first half frenzy which finished 17-15.

They emerged from the break at similar speed with Wariors wing Vicky Laflin intercepting and running 60m to score. But keeping to the script, Saracens struck back through Georgie Lingham, with tries from Lottie Clapp and Holly Aitchinson-extending the advantage.

Carys Phillips crashed over from a driving maul for Warriors but Saracens were clear.
