Trim Tier 2 and introduce new cup
ED Griffiths’ constructive report contains many positive recommendations, not least his proposals for future academies.
However I am not convinced that expanding the Championship is the right approach. As an alternative I would reduce the league to eight teams identifying those clubs who have aspirations to the Premiership and have the capability to satisfy stringent criteria in order to compete at that level.
The criteria would cover 1) Realistic business model; 2) Potential for growth; 3) Fan base; 4) Infrastructure.
Such a league would result in 14 matches for each club, ensuring a premium standard.
I suggest a radical change to the second tier European competition by abandoning the Challenge Cup. French clubs are not interested in it so I suggest replacing it with an Anglo/ PRO12 competition consisting of the Premiership and PRO12 teams who do not qualify for the Champions Cup together with the eight Championship clubs. This format would challenge the performance levels of the Championship clubs. Their participation should attract larger crowds and enhance their profile.
A reduced fixture list would promote player welfare and enable clubs to operate with smaller squads.
My proposal renders the topic of promotion to the Premiership less of an issue as the Championship clubs will have the opportunity of locking horns with the Premiership annually.
Griffiths’ proposals are a welcome step forward. The question is does the RFU have the mindset to pick up the gauntlet? I hope so.
