Dai fears more will follow Hill to riches in Japan

- By ALEX BYWATER

CARDIFF director of rugby Dai Young admits he is concerned more players could follow Cory Hill out of Welsh rugby’s exit door in favour of big money moves abroad.

The Arms Park outfit confirmed on Friday that Wales lock Hill, below, has left Wales’ capital region with immediate effect for what TRP understands is a lucrative transfer to Japan.

Hill’s decision means he has not only walked out on Cardiff but also the riches of Test rugby because he will not be able to represent Wales while playing in the Far East.

The money on offer in the Japanese Top League far exceeds that in Welsh rugby which has been hit hard financially by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Asked if he could see a repeat of Hill’s scenario, Young said: “It could happen, but that’s professional sport. If you look at any sport they are under these sorts of pressures.

“This is not something that’s new to rugby and it will continue as well.

“It was a big decision for Cory not only to leave Cardiff, but to give up his opportunities with Wales so it must have been a big wrench for him to make that. Will he be the last? Probably not. It’s part and parcel of the game.”

Hill’s status as a 32-cap international means he is a big loss to both Young and Wales head coach Wayne Pivac. At 29, he is a player in his prime.

“I was disappointed because you never want to lose your best players. I’m quite new to the role and Cory was a big part of what we were trying to build here. He’s a quality player,” said Young.

“But rugby is a short career and I was a player so I understand it from their point of view. Am I still disappointed Cory won’t be at Cardiff next season? I am 100 per cent. But he does go with my best wishes.”
