Exeter University remain top of the class

IT WAS Super Saturday at the top of the league yesterday as the four best clubs heading into the weekend went did battle in two huge matches in the South West Premier.

First, top-of-the-pile Exeter University showed their title ambitions with a fifth-straight win against second-place Bournemout­h.

It was the toughest test the hosts have had so far this season, but they managed to edge the contest 28-25 after an epic end-to-end encounter.

The hosts touched four converted tries with Charlie McCaig and Benjy Joseland among the scorers to make it fifth bonus-point wins from five outings so far, scoring a staggering 233 points and conceding just 87 at the other end.

Bournemout­h host Exmouth next week in another clash that is sure to light up the South

West Premier division. The newly-promoted

Hornets recorded yet another win as they made it five wins from five to move up to second in the table with a 28-13 win against Old Redcliffia­ns, who dropped down to fifth place.

Exmouth RFC are now up to fourth after their 20-18 win against

Royal Wootton Bassett at the Imperial Recreation Ground.

They led 10-8 at the half-time interval, before a try and conversion in the second half secured the win.

After three straight defeats, Drybrook finally bounced back with a 20-7 win over Brixham at the Mannings Ground.

Bottom-of-the-table

Camborne remain winless after they fell to a fifth-straight defeat with

Western-super-Mare triumphing 24-14 at the Recreation Ground.

Meanwhile, Okehampton picked up a second win of the season with a 20-13 win against Launceston at the Showground.

The hosts scored three tries through Nicky Martin, Leon Horn and Richard Bolt with Tom Foggarty adding the other five points from the tee.

Elsewhere, Ivybridge dropped to second bottom of the table after losing out 24-20 to Old Centralian­s, who moved up to eighth following their first win of the season following two draws.
