Milton’s Met boys tear Tata to strips

- By STEFFAN THOMAS

CARDIFF Met began their Championship Plate campaign with a comprehensive 30-5 bonus point victory at Tata Steel.

Dan Milton’s side score four tries through Tom Workman, Keian Richards, Dylan Davies, and Ewan Bowden, with. Jamin Hodgkins kicking ten points.

Head coach Milton has a tough balancing act with the university playing BUCS Super League fixtures in midweek, meaning he must find the right balance between continuity and resting players. But his side were on fire here and completely outplayed Tata Steet.

Loosehead prop Workman claimed the game’s opening try as he powered his way over from shortrange, before scrum-half Richards finished off a tremendous team try. Elusive wing Bowden was a threat throughout this entertaining fixture, and he showed his pace to touch down in the righthand corner.

Replacement scrumhalf Davies also got in on the action as he ran in unopposed from 30 metres to secure an impressive victory for Cardiff Met.

In the only other Championship Plate fixture being played this weekend

Bedwas recorded a 13-5 away win at Cross Keys.

The game was played in difficult conditions at Pandy Park with the Bedwas pack having too much power for the hosts to deal with. Bedwas’ only try was scored by powerful No.8 Alex Bourne who showed his strength when he barged his way past three defenders to touch down. Matt Bancroft improved their lead with a conversion and also kicked a penalty.

Replacement Dion McIntosh put Bedwas 13-0 up with a penalty from 35 metres out. To their credit Cross Keys refused to throw in the towel and No.8 Francisco Suoto showed his power with a try from short-range. But it was too little too late as Bedwas held on.

Trebanos’ home clash with Ystalyfera fell victim to the weather and was called off.
