Perry hits four to keep pace with leaders

AFTER suffering back-toback defeats Newport (Salop) tasted victory in their Shropshire derby tie against Bridgnorth.

Chris Perry led the fight for Newport scoring four tries, while Oli Buckley and Tom Cowell also scored in a competitiv­e game. The hosts led 19-13 at half-time and powered on to win 38-20 and move up to fifth place – just four points of top spot.

Leaders Bromsgrove ran out 26-17 victors at

Doncaster Phoenix and sit two points clear.

In a frantic opening eight minutes Thomas Sadler opened the scoring for the visitors before Ross Attwood also crossed the whitewash.

Despite Richard List responding for Donny, Sadler scored his second try for Bromsgrove before William Trumper added a fourth and final try to secure the bonus point.

Sandbach are the team touted to challenge for league honours and they showed their form with an emphatic 47-14 win at

Paviours.

Two tries each came from Mark Irving and James Preston as Sandbach moved clear of their opponents in the second half following a scrappy first 40 minutes.

Further tries came courtesy of Kieran Stubbs and Aaron Briscall, on his debut, while Will Cargill kicked four conversion­s.

Sheffield are also among the leading pack with six wins from their opening seven matches, their latest coming 28-5 against Nuneaton.

Ianto Jones scored an early brace of tries for the visitors to set them on their way before Ieuan Cooke and Will Hodgson added further scores.

Scunthorpe are the only other of the leading four sides with six wins from seven and snatched a dramatic 21-19 victory at

Oundle.

Joey Mowbrey, Josh Lugsden and Tom Foster scored tries for the visitors while Tom Alldridge kicked the remaining points.

Dudley Kingswinfo­rd edged out Broadstree­t 3123 in a tough encounter which moves the hosts up to eighth after three wins and four defeats.

Maintainin­g their challenge in the top half was

Syston who made it backto-back victories with a 26-14 win at Burton.

Scoring the tries for Syston were Sam Reid, Sam Harrison, Jay Rudkin and Reece Jones to keep their team battling for promotion.
