Students stay top after key Exmouth win

-

LEADERS Exeter University overcame third-placed visitors Exmouth 27-7 in one of their sternest tests of the campaign so far.

In topping the table, Exeter University have won every game with a bonus point.

They managed to get the extra point this time, too, but only just as they ran in four tries, with Scott Butterworth and Tom Eelman among the scorers.

The away defeat saw Exmouth drop a place to fourth in the standings.

Second-placed side Hornets had a much more routine win as they smashed struggling Drybrook 50-10 on their travels.

Western-super-Mare have now lost back-toback games after they were beaten 27-18 by Old Redcliffians.

For high-flying Redcliffians, it was a fifth victory in a row.

Sam Rees scored a brace for the visitors, while Sam Taylor and Ryan Barrow ran in single scores.

The hosts scored three tries themselves, with Jack Curtis, Huw Morgan and Tom Sugg crossing the whitewash.

In the upset of the day, Camborne climbed off the bottom of the table as they beat mid-table Ivybridge 34-25 in an end-to-end classic at the Recreation Ground.

The hosts scored five tries to secure the bonus-point, with Ben Priddey, Dom Tresidder, Jordan Sidwell, Jack King and Matt Horton on the scoresheet.

From the kicking tee, Dan Rutter completed the hosts’ tally with three conversions and a drop-goal.

Bournemouth ended a run of five straight defeats as they put in a much better performance to beat Launceston 37-22 at Chapel Gate.

Tries from Adam Higgens, Josh Wickens and Ashley Taylor secured the much-needed win for Bournemouth.

Tenth-placed Royal Wooton Bassett are now only one place and one point behind Old Centrallians after they beat their local rivals 22-17 in a fiery affair.

The visitors had been 17-13 ahead at the break, but the hosts fought back and managed to win the match late on.

And, finally, Brixham registered only their third win of the season as they overcame Okehampton 33-17 in what was probably their best performance of the campaign this far.
