The Fishes swim to title contention

NEWPORT (Salop) maintained their pressure on the top after a stern second-half display saw them come from behind at Dudley Kingswinfo­rd to take a 41-29 victory.

The title chasers were in danger of losing their third game of the season and vital ground at the top as they were behind by four points with a 26-22 half-time score in a game which was always close.

However, 19 points with little answer in the second half secured another bonus-point win for them.

Jake Leonard and Nemani Rayabo both scored a brace of tries for Newport, while Matt Hubbart and David Manning also crossed the whitewash, with Jake Leonard kicking two conversion­s.

Despite having played a game more than Newport it is Bromsgrove who remain the team to catch three points above their Shropshire contenders.

This weekend, Bromsgrove saw off bottom-three side Paviors running out 49-10 victors. Tries for the leaders came courtesy of William Harris, Ross Atone twood, William Trumper, Jamie Atkin, Jake Attwell and a penalty try.

Sheffield lost ground in the title race, despite fighting to a valiant 7-6 win at Syston. Matt Adcock scored the game’s only try, while Will Hodgson kicked a vital conversion. The win meant Syston fell to eight points behind the leaders with Reece Jones kicking their points.

Scunthorpe,who started the day with the pack. However, Scunthorpe went down 62-10.

Elsewhere, Sandbach ran out 48-19 winners over

Broadstree­t with the visitors starting quickly during a clinical opening quarter which saw the bonus-point try sealed. Two tries each for Jack Leech and Jimmy Gore was followed by Elliott Morris, John Whittaker and James Preston tries.
