Penallta keep lead in East but Newbridge are coming

- By STEFFAN THOMAS

NEWBRIDGE ran in eight tries on their way to a comprehensive 45-5 victory at Senghenydd in Division One East.

A brace of tries from James Gahan, along with scores from Luke Morgan, Zach Stuart, Robbie Turley, Sam Watkins, Dan Davies, and Ben Murphy crushed the hosts. Eamonn Rees also contributed ten points from the tee.

Morgan’s try was an eye opener with some tremendous interplay between backs and forwards allowing him to touch down in the corner.

However, their impressive victory wasn’t quite enough to put them at the top of the pile after Penallta destroyed Risca 87-7.

Division One East looks set to be a hotly contested league, but it would be a surprise if either Penallta or Newbridge weren’t at the top by the end of the season.

Brynmawr might be the closest challengers with their forwards grinding out an impressive 9-7 win at Dowlais. Liam Butler and Dan Butler kicked their points between them.

In Division One West,

Llangennech solidified their position at the top of the table with a 30-10 bonus point win over Crymych despite having Liam Tobias sent off. Andrew Thomas, Jordan Saunders, and Kalum Evans scored Llangennech’s tries, while they were also awarded a penalty try.

Thomas’ try was the pick of the bunch as he ghosted his way past four defenders with some good footwork to score. Osian Evans kicked eight points. To their credit Crymych were highly competitive throughout and breached the hosts’ try line on two occasions with Llan Philips and Tomos Lewis touching down.

Llangennech are three points ahead of second placed Aberystwyth who thrashed Penclawdd 41-7.

In Division One North,

Pwllheli recorded an 18-3 win at Llangefni to ensure they remain top of the table by a point ahead of Caernarfon.
