Wales turn on the power to smash seven past Scotland

HAVING finished a disappoint­ing fifth in the Six Nations, Wales kicked off their Summer Series with a convincing seven-try win over Scotland in baking hot conditions in Treviso.

Wales opted for a strong starting 15 with highly rated Exeter Chiefs youngsters Christ Tshiunza and Dafydd Jenkins in the XV.

Byron Hayward’s side were superior at the breakdown as the Welsh jackalers imposed their dominance from the off and ended up winning the turnover battle 6-3.

Wales scored the opening try as Oli Andrew touched down after being picked out by a precise lateral kick by captain Joe Hawkins, with the winger pirouettin­g his way to the try line.

Daniel Edwards narrowly missed the extras, but Wales’ dominant start continued as Rhys Barratt was on hand to bulldoze his way through the defence and stretch their lead.

Senior legends James Hook and Leigh Halfpenny have recently been offering advice to Wales’ U20s kickers and their kicks from hand were exemplary throughout.

Scotland replied through sustained pressure and Simon Hiddleston scored a close-range pick and go try but moments later Wales scored their third try as the two flankers combined as Ryan Woodman setup Ethan Fackrell.

On the stroke of halftime Wales secured the four-try bonus point as Harry Houston dotted down after clinical Welsh play inside the red zone.

The Welsh onslaught continued afer the interval. Hawkins produced a marauding run to takes them within five metres and Edwards’ looping pass off the recycled phase picked out Andrew who dotted down for his second try in the corner.

Scotland enjoyed the bulk of possession and territory in the second half as as Patrick Harrison went over from close range following persistent pressure.

But against the run of play Wales scored their sixth try as Morgan Lloyd capped a fantastic performanc­e with the replacemen­t scrum-half spotting a gap and pouncing to dart over.

Scotland thought they had scored a further try through Ali Rogers, but the TMO spotted a knock on in the build-up.

Wales scored try number seven as their physical prowess showed once more as Morgan Morse went over after peeling off a maul. But Kenny Murray’s side wouldn’t go away as substitute Harrison scored his second try and despite being well beaten, Scotland can be proud of their second half efforts.
