ALL-TIME ROTHERHAM XV SELECTED BY ROTHERHAM FANS IN 2011

-

15 Bernardo Stortoni

Pumas Test player and crowd favourite who brought true class to proceedings during his one season with the Titans. Could have gone for club legend Kevin Plant who scored 927 points in 100 appearances for the club back in the early days. The versatile Plant also played fly-half.

14 David Strettle

Scored 27 tries in 41 games for Roth including a hat-trick on his debut against Rugby Lions. Notched up 18 tries in 22 League games in National One in the 2004-5 season and also earned a place in the England Sevens team. Eventually left in 2006 for Harlequins, then Saracens and now Clermont.

13 Kevin Maggs

Arrived at Bath in the summer of 2009, the autumn of his career, and demonstrated all his nous and experience during a difficult season for the Titans as they fought to avoid relegation from National One.

12 Mike Umaga

Brother of Tana, made his name at 1995 World Cup at full-back for Samoa, joined Halifax RL and then returned to Union for a seven-year spell at Roth which saw him make 141 League appearances, scoring 39 tries and logging up 572 points. Eventually moved on to Coventry.

11 Errie Classens

Brother of Boks scrum-half Michael, Errie could play anywhere in the back. Huge amount of X-factor, he amassed 38 tries in 87 League matches between 2005-09. Just gets the nod ahead of Michael Wood who claimed 41 tries in 88 matches with Roth.

10 Ramiro Pez Arrived from the Roma club and produced the best rugby of his career for Rotherham, piling up 596 points in just 49 matches with 14 tries included in that. Simon Binns and Gareth Steenson were other mighty performers, Rotherham were well blessed at fly-half.

9 Dave Scully

Was already a legend at Wakefield when he arrived at Roth in 1998 but quickly became a club favourite with his 100% dedication to the cause. A dangerous runner at scrum-half he scored 29 tries in 112 league matches. A key member of England’s World Cup winning Sevens squad in 1993.

1 Simon Bunting

An incredible career spanned almost the entire Rotherham story, starting in North Division Two 1990 and finishing 15 years later having experienced all the highs and lows of promotion, relegation and the near liquidation of the club. In all, 205 league appearances and seven tries.

2 Chris Johnson

A very classy, pacey, footballing hooker who was tipped for England honours earlier in his career. Arrived at Rotherham after a spell with Northampton Saints and win, lose or draw rarely failed to produce a top level performance. In 81 appearances, he scored 21 tries.

3 Stuart Turner

An impressive scrummager in two seasons at Rotherham and stood up well during that difficult first season in the Premiership. Moved to Sale where he enjoyed a long and successful career and also won three England caps.

4 Glen Kenworthy

Very useful athletic operator at lock and natural successor to Dudley, who made his debut in 1998. Finished his Rothrham career with 158 appearances and six tries before moving to Yorkshire neighbours Doncaster, first as a player and then to assist with the coaching.

5 John Dudley

Massively influential figure and personality in the rise and rise of Roth in the first decade and bit of League rugby. Former steelworker and bouncer and a tough and very competitive presence in the pack. Made 197 appearances at lock or No 8 between 1987 and 2000 and helped himself to 49 tries

6 Ben Wade

A close call with Craig West, one of the stalwarts from the early years, but Wade was a stand-out performer for Rotherham in the tumultuous period of 1997-2001 when he ‘retired’ after picking up a serious knee injury against Bath. Remarkably, 12 years later, he made a comeback and finished with 98 League appearances, scoring 31 tries.

7 Hendre Fourie

A very considerable presence at openside flanker who was on the cusp of an England career when cut down by a serious knee injury soon after moving to Sale. For Rotherham, he was a powerhouse player between 2005-07 making 53 appearances, scoring 15 tries before moving to Leeds Carnegie. Just edges out the excellent Neil Spence.

8 Mike Schmid (Captain)

Rugged Canadian who epitomised Rotherham’s unquenchable spirit during his spell with the club, as a player and coach, between 1997-2005 which took in the full gamut of emotions, hope and despair, success and defeat. In 139 League appearances, he scored 39 tries.
