We need to push on, says Wynne
JERSEY skipper Lewis Wynne is confidant the island side has the mental strength to continue their unbeaten league form, and ignore the on-going league structure uncertainty.
The former Scotland U20 back row says that despite the growing target on their back, Reds’ recent cup defeat against tier two champions Ealing is the perfect poison to ensure no complacency in Harvey Biljon’s title-chasing side.
Jersey went into this weekend unbeaten in the Championship after seven games, just two bonus points behind Ealing.
Wynne said: “We believe we’re a very good team having a great season, as you can see from the first nine games. But we need to keep that confidence going, we need to keep pushing on.
“It was a minor set back against Ealing but it’s still early in the season. We played tremendously in parts, we just need to start putting it all together better, we know we’re not a complete package yet.
“We’ll come back much stronger from the defeat and make sure that when we come out for a second half we’re battling, that we score first and don’t concede two soft tries in five minutes.
“We won’t worry about the promotion issue that we’ve got no control over, we’ll just continue to try to play exciting rugby.”
While Ealing ended Jersey’s nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions a fortnight ago, Reds went into yesterday’s home clash against Richmond after “a deserved week off to press the reset button”, the 26-year-old said.
Jersey are on an unbeaten run of ten games in the Championship, going back to February – their best ever tier two form.
On Jersey’s mentality, the ex-Glasgow and Edinburgh star said: “We’re always looking to learn. We said this at the end of the Ealing game, you learn so much more from your losses than your wins.
“You always look at a win with rose tinted glasses whereas a loss, you have to look at yourself and each play. We’ve learnt tons from the Ealing trip on what we can do, and especially as the captain, making sure I make the right decisions for the team, which sometimes I didn’t do.”
