Cathedral claim the spoils in thriller at Arms Park

- ■ By ELISE HAMMERSLEY

A JAM-PACKED week has seen Schools Vase and Cup regional finals, County Cup efforts, and games at historic club venues all completed.

Cathedral School Llandaff beat Wycliffe College 17-10 in a classic clash at Cardiff Arms Park which saw three yellow cards. This cross-border showdown is always a close one with Cathedral School narrowly winning two out of their previous three meetings.

Cathedral coach and director of sport Mark Barrington said: “We had a few players out with illness and injury so it was an opportunity for the strength of the squad to be challenged.

“We started very strong and got some continuity, but a few unforced errors crept in which meant we struggled with our flow in attack. It was a real honour to have friends and family and old boys come back.”

The team move onto their final game of the 15s season next week with another big clash against Hereford Cathedral School under the lights at Hereford RFC.

In the North and Midlands County Cup final, a fantastic campaign was rounded off by King’s Macclesfield who beat Wirral Grammar 26-3 to give them their first County Cup title ever.

In the Bowl – the competition for teams who were knocked out of the main competition in the first round – Coopers’ Coborn secured a win over Tiffin 13-6 in the London and South East regional final while in the Midlands area knockout final KES Five Ways extended their winning record to beat Leicester Grammar School 28-20. Dame Allan’s Schools beat Gosforth Academy 17-14 in their County Cup semi-final.

In the Schools Vase, Old Swinford Hospital won 62-18 against Ivybridge Community College and Durham unseated reigning champions Mount St Mary’s College 20-10.

Whitgift delivered a 50-7 trouncing to St Joseph’s College in the Daily Mail Trophy. Whitgift will take on Ipswich next week.
