Robson hoping for a double delight

- ■ By LUKE JARMYN

WELSH fly-half Arwel Robson is dreaming of a special double in May, with his first child due on the same weekend as the Championship Cup semi-final.

The Cornish Pirates playmaker leads one of the most creative backlines in the Championship and finished top seeds from the pool stage.

After a lacklustre start to the season, their league title hopes are long gone but the 26-year-old former Dragons star is confident Pirates can still get their hands on some silverware having won five games in a row heading into this weekend.

Robson said: “My baby is due the day after the semi-final so I’ll be saying to my partner ‘hold on Sash’, as I don’t want to be speeding across Cornwall to the hospital.

“We’re really looking forward to the cup, as a squad we understand where we are in the league but were striving to move up the league. We’re playing with the shackles off now and are looking to play an exciting brand of rugby like we did at Ampthill and against Coventry.

“We know what we have to do. It comes off the collision. If we win the impact our speed of ball is so fast it’s hard to defend.”

Robson moved with his partner to the Duchy during the short 2020/21 Covid season and hasn’t looked back. He is fifth in the tier two points charts this season and remains ambitious.

He adds: “It’s not bad, having a baby due in the summer. Hopefully we’ll have a good week if we win the semi and get into the final. Then four or five weeks off down on the beach with the baby, depending on what happens, so we couldn’t have planned it any better, it’s our little haven.

“I’m very ambitious. Speaking to Gavin (Cattle, Pirates coach) I’ve always said how ambitious I am, that I believe I’m good enough to play at the top level. But all I can control is how well I play, pushing the team forward and that’s all I can do.”
