A community and civic role
ROLE IN SCARBOROUGH Martyn Dunning, as the vicar of Scarborough, has given support to the mayors of the borough of Scarborough for many special services held in St Mary’s Church, at the Town Hall and other venues. These include the annual Civic Service and important events such as Yorkshire Day, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Anniversary of the Bombardment of Scarborough, the annual Armed Forces Day services and, in line with the Royal British Legion, many services including the Laying of the Crosses in Alma Square and the Service of Remembrance at Oliver’s Mount. age groups and through their work have touched the hearts of many people within our parish community, town and indeed the borough.
“Martyn’s warm, reassuring approach, his ability to communicate at all levels, give praise and encouragement when needed, through both happy and sad times and even include a degree of humour, has gained respect from many people within the community.
“The extent of this is evidenced by the wonderful gathering within St Mary’s Church for his grand ‘bring and share lunch’ .
“It brought together the congregations within our church, not forgetting the work for Rainbow Centre and I can say as a North Yorkshire county councillor, the Rainbow Centre is the flagship of the county.”
Christine Cox, who chairs the Friends of St Mary’s, spoke of the relationship between the Friends and the church which had been so enhanced by Martyn’s involvement.
She said: “He has ministered faithfully and many have reason to be grateful to Martyn for his wisdom and insight.”
Christine added: “He has led the church with God-given grace and has always had particular care for the Rainbow Centre.”
