Cayton Primary School held their nerve to lift the Scarborough & District Hardball Cup after a hard-fought final against Gladstone Road School at North Marine Road on Friday.

After beating Bramcote, Filey and Lindhead in their group fixtures, Northstead conceded their semifinal game and Cayton went straight into the final of the competition.

They batted first at North Marine Road and made 2383, Leon Kennedy getting them away to a solid start before Koby Wilson and Jake Seastron boosted their total later on.

Gladstone Road batted well and it looked like they were going to ease to their victory target, but a superb stumping by Wilson and run-out from the boundary from the last ball of the innings by Kennedy helped Cayton restrict their opponents to 224-2.

Kennedy was handed the Best Batsman Award after the game, while Seastron won the Most Promising Cricketer honours.

Gladstone Road’s Luke Bennett won the Best Bowler Award.

Cayton teacher and cricket coach Mark Vasey was quick to sing the praises of his side.

Vasey said: “We’ve got our name on the trophy five times now, which is a great achievement.

“All bar one of the players, will be able to play next year as well, so things are looking good.

“It was a great team effort by all the players.”
