Dear Reader
Despite all financial pressures, it’s good to see that Scarborough’s historic public gardens and are still being well-maintained. They are neat, packed with scents and hues at the moment. Of the formal South Cliff Gardens, most people head to the Italians Gardens off the Esplanade but the other day the Rosary (now Rose Gardens), were equally spectacular. They were a private garden in the 1880s for the fortress-looking home opposite (now flats with more big bins on display than was ever envisaged), with its own subway under the road, the entrances for which are still visible. Pupils from Wheatcroft School took part in a project relating to the garden a few years ago, creating their own designs. The paths around the outside of the gardens above the Spa are cracked and dated but at least the gardens are being looked after and still offer a tranquil setting which locals and visitors much appreciate.
