Arson suspected after firebugs target ‘army’ site

-

Firefighters were called to put out a blaze at the site of Scarborough’s former Military Adventure Park, North Bay.

Two engines were called at around 3pm on Saturday to the derelict site at Peasholm Gap after passers-by raised the alarm.

Firefighters used cutters to gain access to the premises so they could tackle the flames.

The investigation has been turned over to North Yorkshire Police after a group of youths were seen running from the site just before the fire took hold. A spokesman for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue added: “Scarborough crews attended and dealt with a fire in a derelict building. Two hose reel jets used to extinguish. Cause believed to be deliberate by youths and the incident has been left with police.”

The former Atlantis site is set to become the home of the town’s new multi-screen cinema.

A planning application from waterpark developer Benchmark is being processed by the council.
