The annual meeting of the Rillington and District Horticultu­ral and Industrial Society was held in the Coach and Horses.

Officers elected were: president Robin Bellfield, chairman Sue Butler, vice chairman Gordon Malan, treasurer Richard Denton, show secretary Tracey Ireland, schedule secretary Gordon Malan assisted by Denise Dudley, minutes secretary Marion Cockrem, school liaison Vicky Lamb.

The Treasurer reported a loss of £116.24 on the show.

Annual membership of the society is £2 and gives a discount on selected garden requisites from six local garden centres.

The committee would like to sincerely thank the vice presidents and sponsors of the show without whose generous support the show would not be financiall­y viable.

The 94th show will be held on Saturday September 16, 2017.

The photograph­y classes for the 94th show are ‘Weather’ and ‘In My Garden’ there will also be an open class and class for a photograph with an amusing caption.

The class for the tallest sunflower grown by an under 12 year old is being replaced by the largest sunflower head.

Christmas menus for the Fleece and Coach and Horses were considered and the majority of members voted to go to the Coach and Horses. Reservatio­ns will be taken at the November meeting.

Gemma Bicknell of the Topiary Tree will demonstrat­e a Christmas arrangemen­t at the November meeting. Moor to the A64 including Sledgate.

The event is free and light refreshmen­ts will be available.

Unfortunat­ely, the speaker was unable to attend but luckily Pamela wild stepped into the breach and gave a very interestin­g talk about her time in service to Queen Mary as a pastry chef. This was followed by Barbara Grice, who together with Pamela, told us about their visit to Southwell Workhouse. The chairman gave the vote of thanks.

The minutes of the September meeting were read and approved. The final decision was given on the Christmas dinner venue. Reminders were given about Rillington YCA Meld Supper. The competitio­n was won by Angela Holdsworth and the raffle by Jill Thorpe.

The next meeting is on November 9 when the speaker is Sue Woodcock and the competitio­n is ‘a four-line Santa joke’. New members are always welcome. chapel to continue with their study of the book of Genesis. Kim Canterbury was the coffee morning hostess on Tuesday and your kind donations continue to be given to the shoebox appeal. We hope to be filling the shoeboxes on Tuesday October 25 at 1.30pm. Check the chapel noticeboar­d for details.

The service on Sunday was led by the Rev Bob Whitfield assisted by his wife Brenda. We were welcomed by Christine Pickard, steward was Jean Brown and offertory steward Ray Pickard. The lesson from the book of Timothy was read by Jan Tebb. Chris Cade was the organist and Christine Fenwick operated the audio visual equipment. The children handed out white leaves that they had made so that we could focus on them for our prayers. Sometimes life seems bleak but spring and colour will come again.

After worship we enjoyed refreshmen­ts together in the hall. The Holy Communion service next Sunday at 10.30am will be led by the Rev Nigel Spencer and all are welcome.
