Problem solving

-

The East Yorkshire Family History Society’s last meeting took the form of a help session, where members could share their experiences of tricky problems encountered during their genealogical researches.

Bringing together disparate families into a coherent family tree can sometimes be very difficult if the various branches do not all come from the same locality. In this instance researchers can look for marriages in other parts of the country and see who the witnesses were; there’s often a very useful clue to be found if one goes down a seemingly obscure path.

We heard about Quaker marriages, which are very different from the format to which most members are accustomed. As all attending such a ceremony sign the marriage deed as witnesses, that could involve a lot of research if following up the previous hint! We learned about researching military ancestors, and lots of different records, sources and resources were mentioned. It is hoped that we shall be able to hold a similar session sometime during 2017.

The next meeting will take place on October 25 when Pam Walgate and Rita Hooton will tell members about the Friends of Dean Road and Manor Road Cemeteries’ World War One Project.

Everyone is welcome at the society’s meetings, which are held at St Andrew’s United Reformed Church, Ramshill, and commence at 2pm.

However, people who are not members of the society are asked to pay £2 towards running costs. Tea, coffee and biscuits are available after the meeting. Entry to the church hall is via the Albion Crescent door. For further details please contact Mrs P McNaughton on 01723 369070.
