As South Bay yearns for action to resolve the blight that was Scarborough’s largest theatre, the focus is well and truly on North Bay. How lucky we are to have such contrasting bays around the headland. To younger folks, who never knew the glory days of Marvels, Zoo and Marineland, WaterSplash/Waterscene/ Atlantis, or Kinderland or the bird aviary and tree walk at Peasholm, North Bay must be regarded as a duller option. But Alpamare, the Sands apartments, the expanded Open Air Theatre, and the slowlyemerging new wonder that will be a cinema-restaurant complex, are creating a new buzz, and will also help spur on further change in South Bay’s character. Back to the Futurist ... if the awful eyesore remains for the summer season again, the responsibility would lie squarely with the borough council which determined it should close but not planned for a cosmetic, positive-message coverage during demolition limbo.
