New club keeps young people fit and healthy

Youthful activities on offer at the Gallows Close Centre

Young people in Scarboroug­h are being invited to try their hand at a range of fun-filled activities designed to develop skills and improve health at a new youth club.

The youth club at the Gallows Close Centre is offering young people from school year 6 to 19 year olds the chance to have a go at sports, such as football and circuit training, as well as cooking and crafts.

Games and film nights will alsobepart­oftheprogr­amme at the centre on Endcliff Crescent every Thursday from 7pm to 8.30pm.

Young people will also be able to access advice on a number of issues, including sexual health, healthy eating and life skills.

Run by volunteers the club, which also has a group catering for younger children, will operate throughout term time and entry costs just £1.

The project was funded by Sanctuary’s Grand Ideas Fund, which is accepting applicatio­ns from community projects benefiting Sanctuary residents and their communitie­s.

Kimmie Avison, one of the youth club organisers, said: “We want to promote the importance of healthy lifestyles and offer a safe and friendly place for young people and the money from Sanctuary will help us to do this.

“There is a host of exciting activities available at the club and we look forward to welcoming local young people to the Gallows Close Centre.”

Stuart Smith, Sanctuary’s housing area manager, commented: “The youth project at the Gallows Close Centre plays a pivotal role in the community and we are happy to support its work.

“Through our funding and the dedication of the volunteers we hope it will benefit many young people and lead them to live happy, healthy and fulfilled lives.”

Organisers are hoping to provide outdoor activities and some sports coaching when the weather gets warmer.
