Ladies book second after double delight

-

Scarborough Ladies sealed second place in the Yorkshire League Division Five North when they grabbed a double victory over the weekend.

An 8-1 success at University of Leeds 7ths and a 7-2 win against Airedale 2nds made sure they claimed the runners-up spot with six games remaining.

An understrength Scarborough squad sent Leeds running for cover after going 4-0 up in the first half.

Scarborough then added four more before the final whistle, despite something of a disjointed display.

The team then played much better in the home match against Airedale.

Hat-tricks from Helen Evans and Kirsty Tait and a first for the club by Angela Tiernan made sure of the win.

Next Saturday Scarborough entertains Leeds 5ths at 3pm at the Scarborough College astro pitch.

Scarborough Mens 2nds faced City of York 9ths in a Division Six North game at Huntington School, coming away with an excellent 2-0 win.

Fielding a more experienced team than in recent weeks, Scarborough never looked in trouble and were unlucky not to have won by a greater margin.

Will Palmer opened the scoring for Scarborough with a tap-in halfway through the first half after a great passing move, with Ben Miller and Jacob Warters involved in the build-up.

Scarborough continued to dominate in the second half and added to their lead when Palmer smartly finished a one-on-one opportunity with York’s goalkeeper following a counter0attack.

Scarborough were unlucky to hit the post late on in the game but were able to comfortably take all three points.

Man of the match was 13-year-old centre0back Marco Masucci, with Ben Miller and Will Palmer putting in great displays.

Next week the 2nds play away at Ben Rhydding, aiming to continue their promotion push.

Scarborough Men 1sts had a frustrating weekend, losing both of their games.

They began the first of two matches at home to current Division Four leaders Harrogate, who were looking to extend their lead at the top of the table.

Forward Aaron Dyson bagged a consolation goal as the 10-man Scarborough side lost out by a 4-1 scoreline.

Their final match of the weekend was another home tie against Thirsk and Malton 2nds.

The away side flew out of the blocks and went 3-0 up in the first 20 minutes through excellent finishing.

Before half-time Rikki Lawrence and Dyson pulled two goals back making the score 3-2.

The second half was a thriller as Scarborough went in front through Lawrence and Michael Waterfield.

With minutes to go Thirsk and Malton pulled ahead through two short corners making the final score 5-4.

The men will be looking to get back to winning ways at home to Leeds Adel 3rds on Saturday.
