Editor gives talk
Ed Asquith, editor of The Scarborough News, was the speaker at the Probus meeting of February 21 at the Quaker Meeting House.
In a well-attended meeting, his presentation was wideranging and comprehensive.
There was an historical perspective between the days of the paper as a daily and its current format, a mixture of digital and hard copy.
Another historical perspective was when the newspaper was owned locally compared with a bigger company.
The currency of ‘fake news’ as defined by the US president and how young reporters are trained in modern times were two topics that generated much discussion and interest.
Ed outlined the importance of authenticating news and not accepting rumour on social media as fact.
In one part of his talk he spoke about the many scoops attributed to the paper and the number of reporters who had commenced their training at Scarborough to go on to significant careers.
