College to make own trophy for sweet success
Students to make Tour trophy from chocolate
Scarborough TEC will be presenting a tasty award to the winner of the Bridlington to Scarborough stage of the Tour de Yorkshire race. Former student and master chocolatier Andrew Thwaite, will be creating a chocolate version of the trophy to present to the first cyclist over the line in North Bay on Friday April 28.
The world’s largest supplier of high-quality chocolate, Callebaut, the Belgian firm, has kindly donated the chocolate to create the masterpiece for the Tour De Yorkshire.
Andrew Thwaite said: “I have many fond memories of my days at what was Scarborough Technical College and it gives me great pleasure to give back to the college that gave me the skills and inspiration for the career I love.”
Students from Scarborough TEC, formerly known as Yorkshire Coast College, are ready to get to work on the chocolate masterpiece, which will take around four days to build. Engineering students will first help to create the mould for the trophy.
Janet Deacon, area director for North Yorkshire from Welcome to Yorkshire, added: “We are delighted that Scarborough TEC is embracing the Tour De Yorkshire in this innovative way, linking the two engineering and hospitality departments together.
“I am sure the students will enjoy developing the chocolate trophy and I can’t wait to see the finished product.”
The project will be the second at the college for Andrew after he co-ordinated the crea- tion of the chocolate centrepiece for the Scarborough Engineering Week Michelin Star Chef Spectacular.
Ed Dobson, programme leader for hospitality and catering at Scarborough TEC, said: “This is a fantastic and unique experience for our learners to be involved with the design and production of this trophy.”
