Hidden Filey

-

The Filey Mothers’ Union service on Ash Wednesday was led by Audrey Lakin. The bible readings, prayers and hymns all related to Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent.

On March 15 the group welcomed Catherine Walsh who told us about hidden Filey. We were shown pictures of places that are no longer there and the interesting stories connected to them.

We learnt that Tesco is built on an old gas depot, that there was a hotel in what is now the Three Tuns car park, that most of the town used to be fields, and the town centre was at the top of Queen Street in front of what is now the Forge Garage.

Another interesting fact was the earthquake in 1931 when the largest tremor was in Filey and it was felt as far away as Surrey. It also shook the top of the Methodist Church spire which had to be held together with metal.

The branch is providing a welcome pack for the ‘Away From It All’ caravan next month.

The next meeting on April 5 is a service, and on April 19 the Scarborough Angels will be coming to talk to us. New members and visitors welcome. Meet in St John’s Hall at the back of church in West Road every first and third Wednesday at 2.15pm.
