Whitby Bowls Club hosted the first of the East Coast summer merits on Sunday with a new event at its West Cliff green.

It was a two-man team where play was in singles with scores added together and the winners were ones with the best aggregate score.

In event of a tie one player was nominated from each team to play best of three ends.

The winners of the competition were Paul Morgan (Whitby) and Colin Scorah (Castleford), who beat Alan Landers and Ian Richardson (both Whitby) in a very exciting final which came down to a shoot-out.

Paul defeated Alan 21-19 and Ian defeated Colin also 2119 so the final came down to a three- end shoot-out.

Colin Scorah was nominated to play Ian Richardson and after two ends of very good bowling Colin and Paul came out on top.

In the semi finals Paul and Colin defeated Mick Gates and Pete Charter from Borough.

Alan and Ian defeated Ray Leeman and Tim Purcell (Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay).

“All in all it was a very successful day with a lot of very good bowling in sometimes difficult conditions with a stiff breeze blowing,” sai d Paul Morgan, competition and fixture secretary.

“Big thanks must go to Geoff Watson and his team of workers at Whitby for a very well-run day and a great opener to the summer merit season,” he said.

Next up is a drawn pairs at Eastfield on Sunday with a 9.30am start.
