Scarborough’s South Bay has once again been left out of a list of Britain’s top beaches. The Keep Britain Tidy Blue Flag award winners were announced this week and the town’s premier spot was noticeably absent.

The Scarborough News reported how the beach was rated as having “poor” bathing water despite £50 million being spent to try and get it up to the quality of the rest of the borough.

In this year’s awards, Scarborough’s North Bay and Whitby were both awarded the prestigious Blue Flag.

Beaches at Filey, Runswick Bay, Cayton Bay, Robin Hood’s Bay, Scarborough North Bay and Whitby were all give Seaside Awards.

Keep Britain Tidy’s chief executive Allison Ogden Newton said: “It is great news for holiday-makers, overseas visitors and businesses that rely on coastal tourism that we have been able to award so many flags this year.

“The success of our beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded by both awards is testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our beaches – from beach managers to local people and businesses.

“When you enjoy a day on the beach flying a Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country.”

The awards are the quality marks for Britain’s beaches and mean those visiting them can be sure that they are clean, safe and meet the highest environmental standards, as well as the tough international bathing water quality standards.

Brildington’s North And South beaches also got awards.
