Police court life

Mrs Florence Higgins, domestic servant, 21 Grosvenor Crescent, was summoned for having failed to obscure a light at the address stated at 10 o’clock on the night of January 21st. She admitted she had been told not to take a candle in the room. A blind for the latter, it appeared, had not been provided. The magistrates dismissed the case, the Mayor stating that the bench thought it was unreasonable that a person should have to go to bed in the dark. It was a question whether the occupier should not be proceeded against. The chief applied for a summons.
