In our house music is king-at least it is as far as my daughter is concerned.

It’s the backdrop to her every move and so a car with a pumped-up sound system is a definite bonus in her eyes.

It also helps that the Fiat 500L Beats Edition is based on the rather smart 500L Trekking and has the welcome addition of a large stereo courtesy of the latest Beats by Dr Dre technology.

The seven-speaker sound system with a subwoofer for the deeper notes is pretty impressive and certainly passed muster.

If you’re unfamiliar with the L Trekking version of the cute little Fiat 500 it comes as something of a shock when you first see it with its chunky tyres and high ride-heightcourtesy of the 17-inch alloys.

It’s dressed in two-tone grey and black (choice of gloss or matte finish) with black sideskirts, wheelarches and bumper inserts – along with distinctive red brake callipers and red inserts in the mirror fairings which add a touch of glitz.

The interior is mean and moody with a grey dashboard and black seats with red 500 logos stitched on the backrests.

There’s plenty of head and legroom for the driver and all passengers and the adjustable boot floor makes for a very practical loadspace which is pretty spacious.

Our test car came equipped with a rather good 120bhp 1.6-litre MultiJet II turbodiesel engine which, once you disengage Fiat’s annoying stop start system is pretty impressive. It’s quieter than Fiat diesels of old and is more responsive and refined.

It can sprint from 0-62mph in 10.7 seconds, has CO2 emissions pegged at 120g/km and a claimed combined fuel consumptioon of 61.4mpg

It handles in the same way as the standard Trekking with little discernible bodyroll and light steering. Great for when you’re driving around town but a little bit vague at national speed limits.

The six-speed gearbox is precise and a pleasure to use and I like the oversized gear knob although it may not suit others - particularly those with small hands.

Despite the obvious attributes, price may be a sticking point as it is basically a standard 500L Trekking with a high-end stereo and a bit of bling. Price ranges from £20,380 - £21,8880.

As with the Trekking it comes with city brake control, rear electric windows, front fog lights, a touchscreen entertainment system, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers and rear privacy glass
