Free stagecraft workshops earn backing of police boss
Series of events for youngsters at various venues across the borough
A series of free workshops for young people run by the Stephen Joseph Theatre’s OutReach department has received the backing of Julia Mulligan, the Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire.
Stagecraft takes place in Scarborough and Whitby and is an exciting project open to seven to 16-year-olds who can develop new skills through a range of performance arts activities.
The project is led by professionals from SJT OutReach and is supported by the Police and Crime Commissioner North Yorkshire Community Fund.
Children and teenagers are invited to take part in everything from samba drumming and stage fighting to circus skills, music and movement, shadow work and costume making on the theme of heroes and villains. They will also produce a documentary film of the entire process.
A series of Stagecraft workshops will take place either over the course of one week or on a weekly basis depending on location. Participants will be able to show off their newfound skills in a public performance for friends and family at the end of the project and there is also the chance to gain an Arts Council England accredited Arts Award too.
The sessions will be recorded by a professional videographer for a special film screening later in the year. Refreshments will be provided at all sessions.
Stagecraft is free, but places are limited. Email outreach@ sjt.uk.com or contact the Stephen Joseph Theatre Box Office on 01723 370541.
