Douglas tops the charts in club trophy

South Cliff staged the with the course in excellent condition and 45 players teed off with the hope of lifting the club’s prime trophy or indeed the nett trophy, the Committee Cup.

This time last year Liam Douglas was playing off 19 and winning regularly, thereby seeing his handicap trimmed to seven.

After the first round Douglas led with a gross 70 (nett 62) by shot shots from Shaun Smith and Garry Thirkell.

Round two got under way with many wondering if Douglas could hold onto his six-shot lead.

Pars at the first three holes followed by a birdie at the fourth was followed by a dropped shot at six and another birdie at the ninth to see him out in 35 shots 1 under par.

At this point in time, Douglas had an eight-shot lead with Smith and Thirkell going out in 38 shots apiece.

Douglas dropped a shot at the 15th but went on to post a level par round of 72 for a total of 142.

Meanwhile both Smith and Thirkell had their problems, Smith finished on 75 for a two round total of 151 and Thirkell carded a gross 79 for a total of 155 to leave Douglas the clear winner.

As a result of this performanc­e Douglas claimed the Club Championsh­ip Trophy for best gross over two rounds, he also took the Oates Trophy for the best gross in the morning and also the Shepherd Trophy for best gross.

In The Committee Cup Callum Chaplin and Garry Thirkell tied having both posted scores of nett 70 and 73 for a two round total of 143.

The Deepdale Trophy for best nett in the morning went to Barry Moment (13) for his net 67 and the Matthews Salver went to Michael Cappleman (13), who had a nett 69 in the afternoon.

South Cliff ladies’ Sandra Massender and partner Chris McMahon travelled to play in the area finals of the Peugeot LGU Coronation Foursomes at Seaton Carew.

They put up a good fight but lost out by one point on the chance to go on to the final at St. Andrews.

The Clarage Cup played for by ladies aged 55 and over saw Caroline Woodhouse (19) claim the Cup with a nett 72 just pipping Anna Mollen (20), who came second with a nett 73.

In the August Medal, Judy Locking (15) won Division One. Mary Ryan (19) came second with a 76 and Janet Howes(16) came third also with a 76.

In Division Two Ewa Graczyk (24) won with a 70, Glenis Hoskins (23) came second with 73 and Maureen Jamieson(23) came third.
