Scupham bags bronze in Junior run

-

Louise Scupham made the long journey down to Essex on Saturday to compete in the

Louise had an excellent ride to take the bronze medal, and in the process beating last years champion Jennifer McAndrew by over two minutes.

Describing it as the most difficult time trial course she has ever ridden, times were much slower than you would normally expect, with Louise finishing in 1.08.35 with the winner, Cyclo-Cross World Cup rider Amira Mellor in 1.05.34.

The last five miles were the toughest on the course with a sting in the tail of a short steep climb to the finish which Louise crawled over to take the bronze and show the big improvements she has made this year.

There was a change in format to Scarborough Paragon’s club events over the last week, with two hilly events replacing the normal 10 and 25 mile time trials.

The first was a route around Hackness and Scalby, taking in the long climb of Hay Brow.

This was also the last counting event in the season long Ken/Len Trophy.

On Sunday it was a longer event of approximately 20 miles taking in the steep Reasty Bank climb. There was also the Ray Ward Trophy up for grabs for fastest Paragon rider.

The first event saw Steve Dodds have a superb ride to take the win in 20 minutes and 42 seconds which gave him maximum points and the outright win in the Ken/ Len series.

Matt Purnell followed him on the night in 21.44 from John Galway (Keswick Bikes) in third with 22.11.

Other times were Chris Brown (Richardsons CC) 22.25, Simon Ward 22,53, Louise Scupham 24.30, Mike Potter 24.49, Paul Creaser 25.41, Mags Purnell 26.35 and Hannah Bayes 29.43.

In the final Ken/Len standings Steve Dodds took the scratch award with a maximum 40 points, from Shaw Pickard and Daryl Maffey. Steve also won the vets award from Rob Corney and Matt Purnell.

Simon Ward took the handicap award with 35 points, with Hannah Bayes winning both the ladies handicap and juvenile awards.

On Sunday light drizzle again made for tricky conditions on a very hilly route taking in the steep climb of Reasty Bank. Shaw Pickard took the Ray Ward trophy for fastest Paragon rider, but on the day it was road riders Adam Bull and Bob Hewitt who took the spoils.

Young visiting New Zealander Adam Bull stormed round the course to a clear win in 52.54, from Bob Hewitt (YH Training) 53.44 with Shaw in 54.28.

Other times were Daryl Maffey 55.44, Matt Purnell 58.01, Chris Brown (RCC) 1.00.32, Robin Stephenson 1.01.04, Mike Potter 1.04.42 and Jimmy Morrison 1.13.10.

In other events Simon Ward finished with a creditable 2.08.10 in the Team Swift 50 mile Time Trial, to finish in eighth place in an event which also combined a 12-hour event with the winner covering the biggest distance over that time.

Associate Paragon rider Chris Goode (Yorkshire Coast Clarion) took on the longer event to complete 229 miles for 18th place.
