Jenkinson shines as Pirates see off Skirlaugh Bulls at Eastway
Speed merchant Tom leaves Bulls opponents in his shadows during 30-16 Scarborough win
Scarborough Pirates secured a 36-16 home win against a young Skirlaugh Bulls side to move into third place in the Yorkshire Mens League Premier Division.
The Pirates were boosted by the inclusion of veteran Craig Farrell and Scarborough RUFC captain Tom Ratcliffe for the game at a sun-drenched Eastway.
Skirlaugh struck first with a well-worked try from winger Alex Foster to put the Bulls in front shortly after kick-off, and also furthering the tally to 16-6 at half- time after home winger Tom Jenkinson had notched a try after utilising his blistering pace to bring the score within reach for the Pirates at halftime.
After the interval both teams were falling victim to the heat and the aggressive pace of the game.
Scarborough started to take control with a try from captain Dave Douthwaite, with fullback Harry Sleep also picking up points for the Pirates.
Jenkinson then started running riot, picking up two more tries to complete a strong hattrick and seal a 30-16 win, with Ratcliffe successfully kicking all five conversions, some from very tight and awkward angles.
Skirlaugh battled hard with a young set of lads, while Jim Douthwaite enjoyed a stunning debut for the Pirates’ first team.
Skirlaugh awarded Sleep with the man of the match award for consistent kick returns, gaining 20-plus metres each time.
Adam Lee’s men will look to close the gap on second-placed Illingworth this weekend, before facing another away trip to West Hull Lions A on Saturday 22.
Keith Paddock’s young Pirates A side were beaten 24-20 at home by Lock Lane A, and will be looking to bounce back when they host Siddal B at Eastway on Saturday.
