Filey stun Cayton to blow topflight title race wide open

-

The battle for the Beckett Cricket League Premier

Division title took a twist as leaders Cayton suffered a shock 36-run loss at Filey, while rivals Staxton and Staithes both claimed wins.

Cayton must have fancied their chances of claiming victory when they dismissed

Filey for 161, only Aaron Howard, 32, and Jamie Gilbank, 25, impressing for the hosts.

Aussie Nick Strangio hit 39 in reply and Paul Pennock added 36, but the three-pronged attack of Ryan Baldry, 4-28, Ben Briggs, 3-17, and Nathan Robson, 3-38, helped skittle out Cayton for 125.

Staxton are now level on points with Cayton after an impressive eight-wicket win against Flixton 2nds.

The basement team posted a decent 193-6, Will Hutchinson leading the way with 37, while Geoff Hill, 28, Mark Shackley, 27no and Mick Walmsley, 27, all made good starts.

Jodie Robson’s powerful 75 and 60 from David Morris put Staxton in the driving seat, Nick Gibson’s unbeaten 38 wrapping up the win.

Staithes edged to a twowicket win at Nawton Grange despite a great all-round show from Nick Thornicroft.

The former Yorkshire player struck 29 and Mike Wearmouth 27 not out as Grange were all out for 135, Stuart Theaker bagging 4-20.

Thornicroft then snapped up 5-29 to give Staithes a few nervy moments before they scraped home thanks to 35 from Rich Ward and 26 not out from Ian Dixon.

Heslerton eased to a sixwicket win at home to struggling Forge Valley.

Spinner Daniel Jeminson took 4-29 as Valley were restricted to 122-9, Alex Glass, 31, and John Flinton, 25, the only batsmen to shine.

Jake Keyworth, 53, and Sam Triffitt, 43no, ensured the win for Heslerton.

Adrian Turnbull’s unbeaten 119 guided Ebberston to a 126-run win at second-frombottom Scalby.

Eddie Craggs also smashed a decent 59 as the visitors posted 240-2, and Ian Atkinson snapped up 5-37 as Scalby slipped to 114 all out in reply, despite 38 from Joe Hills.

Mulgrave secured promotion from Division A with a 117-run win at Wykeham.

Mario Spagnuolo, 40, and Chris Clarkson, 37, shone as the leaders were dismissed for 160, Matthew Graves taking 3-3 and Dave Pearson 3-28 for the hosts.

Pete Shepherdson hit 23 in reply but was offered little assistance as the home side slumped to 43 all out, Craig Thompson bagging 4-18.

Seamer still look odds-on favourites to join Mulgrave in the top flight after their 14run home win against Wold Newton.

Fine knocks from Gary Lawton, 41no, Darrol Lewis, 37, Jon Broadhead, 27, and Gregg Chadwick, 25, helped Seamer post 181-8, Andy Moore taking 4-40 and J Knaggs 3-17.

Lawton capped a fine allround day with 3-12 as Newton were dismissed for 77, Paul Greenhough taking 4-13.

Openers Craig Sanderson, 96no, and Lee Jack, 26no, steered Sherburn to a 10-wicket win at Grindale.

Daley Wharton took 4-24 as Grindale were dismissed for 131.

Cayton 2nds won by 91 runs at home to Cloughton thanks to an unbeaten 87 from Brian Heywood, allied with 50 from Darren Walker and 41 from S Williams as they racked up 222-5.

Cloughton managed 131-5 in reply.

Settrington defeated visiting Brompton by 161 runs.

The hosts made 237-9, Steve Beal hitting 47, A Morley 46 and Jonty Rounthwaite Jnr 38, James Bruce claiming 5-74.
