Guess the year

-

The Scarborough Writers’ Circle met on August 4 when Mandy Herrington explained how she had been inspired by a 90-year-old lady (named at the end of the session as the Queen). She was interested in what the Queen was like at the age of 10, which led to her idea of a theme for the evening.

The aim of the session was to guess the year from the clues given by each of the members at the age of 10, which they had been asked to write and research prior to the evening.

The first half of the session heard each member read out a 250 word snapshot of what life was like for them at 10. During the break members guessed who was who from photographs of their 10-yearold selves pinned on a board.

The second half of the session had members guessing at the year from individual members’ lists of what was happening in their world at that time. For example, what was in the national papers the year they were 10, which film was released, which book was published, what was invented, what was the Queen doing? There were some interesting and surprising facts that made it difficult to guess. However, some of the more well-known facts gave the game away.

At the end there was a quiz set by Mandy and each answer had the word ‘ten’ within it. It was an entertaining session and everyone had a good time.

The next meeting is the chairman’s evening, led by Dorinda Cass, on Tuesday at 7.15pm in the Arts Room at Scarborough Library.
