Morris is the toast of Filey after winning Gold Medal competition
Filey Golf Club’s Adam Morris,24, became the National Club Handicap Golfer of 2015 by winning the Fuller’s London Pride Gold Medal held at Frilford Heath GC, Oxfordshire. Morris was not only representing Filey, he was also representing Yorkshire as he had previously won the Yorkshire area final to qualify.
His score of 37 stableford points in a poor weather conditions was good enough to beat off the challenge from Cheshire’s Tony Sharp by virtue of a better back-nine score, which included two gross birdies, with Hampshire’s Nick Holloway in third place.
The final was fought out between 59 club golfers representing all counties in England and was played as part of England Golf’s first Golf Week, which celebrated the grassroots game with a fiveday festival of team and handicap events.
Morris had joined Filey as part of their package to encourage under 30-year-olds to play golf as full members at reduced rates.
When he started at Filey he had a handicap of 22, which over the last 16 months had been reduced down to 18 now.
As a result of an exceptional scoring reduction, Adam’s handicap stands at 14.8.
Morris, who also plays cricket for Seamer CC, said: “I had a friend walking round and caddying and it took a bit of pressure off my shoulders.
“I just had to try to keep cool and calm, that was the hardest part but I’m pleased, very pleased especially in the conditions.”
He is now looking forward to playing more golf with his group of friends, who all joined Filey as part of an attractive membership offer and getting his handicap reduced even further.
Morris added: “It was a good experience and a great feeling to win.
“It’s the first thing I’ve ever won playing golf.
“The weather made it a lot more difficult and there were some really good players down there.”
