South Cliff duo set to fly the flag at Alicante event

Johnson and Middleton qualify for International Pairs Comp

-

Scarborough South Cliff pair Paul Johnson (14) and Nigel Middleton (12) will be going off to Spain next week to represent England in the Daily Express sponsored International Pairs Competition.

Having qualified for the UK final at their home club they played at The Warwickshire Golf Club and romped to a great score of 43 points to qualify for the World final by two clear shots.

Middleton got the pair off to a good start on a very long and difficult course but after Johnson’s nerves had settled down they fitted in well together to achieve their winning total, for which they also received medals and golf bags among their various prizes.

North Cliff pair James Hunter and Chris Wharton also gave a good account of themselves when they finished equal seventh on 36 points.

The World final will be held at The Hotel Denia Marriott La Sella Golf Resort & Spa in Alicante with the players enjoying five days in the sunshine all courtesy of the Daily Express and several other sponsors, the final will be contested over two days.

Johnson will already be on holiday in Ibiza with his wife and son but will have to leave them to catch a ferry to Alicante to join up with Middleton.

Middleton has also had a problem or two not the least of which was a frantic chase round to get a passport but thankfully he managed to get it organised.

Last year the event was won by a pair from Selby Golf Club, who held off a late challenge from teams from South African and a Spain to take the title, so let’s hope the South Cliff boys keep the trophy in Yorkshire.
