The newly-formed Yorkshire Coast Swimming Club got off to a flying start with seven swimmers competing in the Yorkshire Championships at Sheffield Ponds Forge pool.

Proud club coach Juan Carlos Lion said: “With swimmers ageing from nine through to 15 years old having qualifying for numerous events, this was a really a great achievement for our club.

“More than anything, it’s really testament to the hard work and motivation of these swimmers that they are doing so well.”

The club were also keen to pass on their special thanks to Bob Hewitt, who is a Scarborough Amateur Rowing Club coach and former Team GB rower.

All-rounder Hewitt, who has also been on top form cycling form over the past few years, has been offering his expertise and kindly providing land and circuit training sessions to swimmers throughout the week.

This has helped to give the swimming club’s members the added stamina, strength and flexibility needed for the pool.

Lino added: “Our swimmers achieved many personal best swims over the weekend at Ponds Forge and can be very proud of themselves, especially Joseph Moment, who is only nine years old, and was a finalist in the 50 metres backstroke race.”

It is nearly a month since the new club started our first session in Bridlington and in The Bay and our squad is getting better and better, with more children joining up with us.

The Bay-based club welcome new swimmers of all ages and all levels of competence, from the age of eight upwards.

Lino said: “If you have set yourself a goal, and wish to get an early start on improving your stroke and technique, then feel free to contact our club as soon as possible by telephone on 07463973346 or by email at jclino@talktalk.net. You can also find us on Facebook.”
