Scarborough’s Poppy Appeal is well under way and organisers are hoping it will be the best ever.

Poppy sellers are out in force on the town’s streets until Remembrance Sunday on November 8 and poppies are also on sale at local shops and businesses until November 11.

Appeal organiser Beryl Anderson said: “We’re very lucky as we have lots of volunteers, many of whom come back every year.

“We a l s o h a v e t h e c a - det units helping out on a weekend taking boxes and tins round Scarborough. It’s great to have young people on board.”

L a s t yea r th e ap p ea l – which ran from October 1 until September 30 – raised in excess of £74,000, which was the biggest total ever.

Beryl said: “I just want to say how humbled I am when we get the support that we do, year in year out.

“There are a lot of charities out there but people never forget the Poppy Appeal.

“I just can’t thank people enough for their support – it’s outstanding.”

Scarborough’s mayor Tom Fox s a i d: “As we a l l know, this year will mark 101 years since the start of World War One and once again the Royal British Legion is encouraging everyone to support the Poppy Appeal during the official period of Remembrance from October 24 to November 11 when we reflect and remember the fallen and our currently serving military personnel. Last year’s national appeal raised over £45 million and it is hoped to increase that figure this year in order to support the Armed Forces community.

“All money raised during the appeal goes directly yo its welfare work with serving service personnel, veterans and their families.”
