AGGRESSIVE APPROACH SUITS NEW BOY FAAMAU
Scarborough RUFC’s new signing Isaac Faamau is aiming to hit the ground running and has promised to bring an aggressive approach to Silver Royd.
The Kiwi number eight will have to wait a week for his debut with the club not having a game this weekend, but that doesn’t bother Faamau, who will turn his attentions to watching his native All Blacks take on Australia in the World Cup final.
Faamau said: “It’s great to finally be here.
“I’ve got itchy feet to get going and get out there on the pitch, but it’s good that I can watch us beat Australia in the final on Saturday.”
The giant forward is aiming to bring an aggressive approach to Silver Royd, admitting that he is keen to get stuck into Yorkshire One action, starting with York away a week on Saturday.
“I’m an aggressive player and I love running with the ball and love attacking,” added the 26-year-old.
Faamau will have a familiar face in the Silver Royd changing rooms in fellow Kiwi Harry Domett.
He added: “I played representative rugby with Harry in New Zealand, he’s a good player and I’m looking forward to playing with him again here.”
Skipper Tom Ratcliffe admits Faamau’s aggressive ap- proach will add something new to the side and is looking forward to seeing the New Zealander unleashed on the field.
Ratcliffe said: “It will be great to see what Isaac can do.
“We’ll look to try and feed him in and see what damage he can cause.
“Hopefull y s ome of our younger players will l earn a thing or two as well. It freshens things up and will give everyone a boost too.”
Scarborough’s youthful side ran in five tries to move up to fifth in Yorkshire One with a 38-29 defeat of Hullensians in a cracker of a game at Silver Royd.
Playing with a stiff breeze behind them, the Seasiders took the lead from Tom Harrison’s kick-off which was spilled by a Hull defender.
From the resulting scrum just outside the 22, the ball was moved through four pairs of hands for wing Graeme Jeffrey to power over wide on the right.
Harri so n’s wide, c ro s s - wind kick sailed over to make it 7-0 with only a minute on the clock.
The Humbersiders looked dangerous on several incursions into Scarborough territory and reduced the arrears i n the fi f th minute when a home defender strayed offside in front of his own posts and Tim Biglin kicked the penalty for 7-3.
The excitement continued with both sides i n positive mood and a terrific break from Scarborough scrum-half Jordan Wakeham released Tom Ratcliffe wide on the right.
The Scarborough skipper’s inch-perfect cross-field kick was hungrily pounced on by Harrison, who beat two defenders and scored near the posts then added the conver- sion for a 14-3 lead in the 12th minute.
Toby Welsby came on for the injured Kiwi Ant Coffey in the 15th minute to swell the ranks of Scarborough’s teenage contingent, who were having a big impact on the game all over the paddock with each and every one in hard-tackling aggressive form.
Ben Martin, not the tallest person on the pitch, was also having a great game bossing the lineout.
Harrison nudged his side 17-3 ahead with a penalty in the 28th minute for a deliberate knock-on, but the visitors struck back almost immediately when scrum-half Chris Smith galloped over following a searing break and superb inside pass by winger Josh Lang- ford.
Biglin missed the conversion.
