Hundreds of car enthusiasts descended on Scarborough seafront on Saturday night as modified vehicles lined Royal Albert Drive.

The Scarborough Cruise drew a huge crowd as the convoy made its way from Thirsk to the town.

Onlookers described the event as “peaceful” and readers of The Scarborough News Facebook page backed the cruise, with dozens of people praising the event and the impact it had on taking of seafront businesses.

Zena Steele wrote: “I thought it was good to see all the cars down there, brings plenty visitors to Scarborough. A bit noisy, and busy on Marine Drive but all harmless fun. I see plenty idiots driving round here all the time, not fair to assume they were from the cruise.”

Organisers, Scarborough Cruise, estimate the actual figure attending at around 1,200.

A spokesman said: “It was easily the biggest turnout I’ve seen in 16 years of being involved. For such a big turn out it was on the whole pretty well behaved.

“Unfortunately there are always a handful of idiots that spoil it but I’m told the police caught up with the main culprits.”

However, the visitors were not entirely welcome.

A pair of borough councillors complained about noise and disruption.

Cllr Neil Price said: “Over the weekend we had upwards of 100 boy racers continually racing up and down the seafront, doing wheelies and burning rubber.

“It caused a noise issue and I want to know what the council can do to monitor this and what we can put in place to stop this from happening?”

Cllr Janet Jefferson said the actual number was 2,000 and said residents complained about noise. She said: “Buildings were shaking due to the vibrations and the police had to be called.”
