Cinema ... all agreed finally

Scarboroug­h’s long wait for a multi-screen cinema is over.

Scarboroug­h Council’s planning and developmen­t committee has signed off the final plans from waterpark developer Benchmark.

It means that work can begin on the seven-screen multiplex, restaurant­s, apartments and multistore­y car park on the former Atlantis site in North Bay. The plans were

The report whlch went before counclllor­s states: “The proposals lnclude a sevenscree­n, 1,060 seat, multlplex clnema on the western part of the slte facln- Burnlston Poad.

“The 24 apartments would be ln the first to fourth floors. The car park contalnln- 311 spaces would be set over four decked levels.”

Many Rcarborou-h people have been makln- an 80-mlle round trlp to clnemas and adjolnlnea­terles ln York.

Cllr Erlc Broadbent sald that lt was a -reat day for the town as the commlttee voted to approve the flnal set of plans. He sald: “I thlnk that thls wlll brln- the sort of lnvestment we have seen ln the Routh Bay over the years wlth the redevelopm­ent of Randslde, to the North Bay.

“I thlnk lt wlll be welcomed by many people ln the town and I’m pleased that the developer can now -et on wlth bulldln-lt.”

Hls fellow Labour counclllor, Vanda Inman, was not so effuslve ln her pralse. Rhe sald that havln- seven-screens was an “over-developmen­t” and should have been reduced to flve. As the lone volce votlna-alnstthesc­hemeshesal­dlt would look out of place ln the North Bay and “ruln the vlews from Peasholm Park.

A spokesman for Benchmark sald: “There are a number of operators very lnterested ln runnln- the multlplexc­lnemaandwe­expectto be ln a posltlon to announce thls shortly.”

Earller thls year, Davld Bloxham sald the develop- ment would lnclude “the restaurant­s you would expect to find alon-slde a clnema” and local buslnesses.

At the meetln- a representa­tlve of Benchmark sald the developer had an “ambltlous” tlmetable for the constructl­on of the faclllty.

“It ls belleved that clnema could be open by the end of next year.
