Scarboro’ to be built in 3D using Minecraft

-

A Scarborough arts festival is to mount an exciting and ambitious bid to recreate the town in 3D in one of the world’s most popular computer games.

For Coastival in February a bid will be made to recreate Scarborough and all its iconic buildings in the game Minecraft.

A huge operation is starting now to have schools, colleges, community groups and individuals painstakingly create buildings and parts of the town in the 3D game.

It will all then be drawn together for a huge Minecraft event over the Coastival weekend on February 18 and 19, at the Spa.

The attempt will be co-ordinated by Krash Labs, a computer club run for children aged between six and 16 and based at the YMCA in Scarborough. The Minecraft Scarborough project is open to everyone.

To get the project moving, Krash Labs is hosting regular drop-in sessions at the YMCA.

These will run every Wednesday between 4pm and 6pm and every Saturday between 9am and 10am, apart from half-term week sessions (October 26 and 29) and the Christmas period (December 21, 24, 28 and 31).

Krash Labs is also looking to work with schools, colleges and community groups and with individuals. To get involved contact info@krashlabs.co.uk or (01723) 350984.

Coastival director Wendy Holroyd said: “Minecraft is huge and creating Scarborough in Minecraft is probably going to be the most ambitious thing that Coastival has ever attempted. We are all really excited about it!

“What appeals to us most about this is that it is going to be a real community effort, with dozens of people getting involved and creating their own special parts of Scarborough and then bringing it all together to complete the job during Coastival weekend. It’s going to be spectacular!”

Damien Ferrari, who runs Krash Labs with Guy Baumann, added: “We are delighted to help gain recognition for our young people for the creative work they do within Minecraft.”
