Youngsters earn crust as sandwich designers
Local primary school pupils proved they had excellent taste when it came to designing a delicious sandwich at Scarborough Market.
A group of youngsters from Friarage Primary School enjoyedatourofthemarketwhile learningaboutthe£2.7mredevelopment work and also met some of the traders.
They learned about the different fresh, local meat, fruit, vegetables and bread on sale at the market – plenty of ingredients that were perfect for making sandwiches.
Once back at school they joined the rest of the pupils in a competition, run by ScarboroughMarketHallandVaults,to design the best sandwich.
The winner was 10-yearold Ola Jankowska who used tiger bread for a sandwich filled with chicken, ham, carrots, tomato, cheese, lettuce and mayonnaise.
Oakley Kelley scooped second place with a sandwich that includedcheese,lettuce,tomato, jam and peanut butter.
Third place went to Mahima Aziz and Holly Taylor who included apple, grapes, cucumber, tomato and mayonnaise in their creation.
Prizes included a special cook’s apron and cookbook for the first prize winner and books for the runners-up.
All the winners received vouchers from Ian Hutchinson at Horsley’s butchers, who supported the sandwich competition.
Councillor Bill Chatt, Scarborough Borough Council’s portfolio holder for public health and housing, said: “The redevelopment work is all about creating a bright and exciting new future for Scarborough Market Hall and Vaults and we were delighted to welcome youngsters who are part of Scarborough’s future to see what is going on.”
