Appeal after incidents with schoolchildren
Police are investigating two worrying reports involving youngsters in Filey
A Filey headteacher has issued a warning to parents and students after a girl is reported to have been touched inappropriately by a man in the street.
Police in the town are appealing for information in regards to the alleged incident on September 29 when a man, believed to be aged between 55 and 60, touched the girl inappropriately as he tried to get past her on Muston Road.
A second incident on October 5 saw a man, believed to be in his 30s, use offensive language against a group of boys on Muston Road, near the Lower Wharfedale turning.
Both incidents occurred between 8am and 8.45am and Ebor Academy Filey headteacher Andrew Galbraith has taken steps in school to educate his students and sent letters out to parents informing them of the incidents.
“As headteacher it is my responsibility, first and foremost, to ensure the safety of all students,” he said.
“Within school, we have robust safeguarding procedures in place and I can reassure you that here, our young people have an appropriate environment in which to flourish.
“However that jurisdiction does not extend beyond the school boundaries.
“I wanted to alert you to two recent incidents when students were approached by strangers on their way into school.
“Students involved were not harmed but were understandably shaken by the experience. “Police were immediately informed and are investigating.
“I have asked my staff to be extra vigilant and students have been reminded of ‘stranger danger’.
“We would always urge parents to speak to their children about ‘stranger danger’ too and to call the police immediately if they notice any suspicious activity or have any concerns.”
Officers are appealing for information from anyone who was in the area on the morning of Thursday September 29 or Wednesday October 5 and witnessed the incidents.
They are also appealing to anyone else who has any information about them.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1 and pass information to the Force Control Room.

Bridlington Business Forum is to host an event on Tuesday October 18 at 2pm, at Sewerby Hall and Gardens, to bring together businesses on the north side of the town with a particular interest in tourism.
Chairman of Bridlington Business Forum, David Dowson, said: “There was an initial gathering of north side businesses at the beginning of this year and this is a follow up session to make sure our local businesses are up-to-date with regeneration plans and to share and develop new ideas for taking business opportunities forward, together, to promote this part of the town and surrounding area.
“We are poised to see Hull UK City of Culture 2017 bring over a million visitors to the area next year.” The session is free and to register by email denise.cowling@eastriding.gov.uk or call (01482) 391708.
