Fears raised over new village hall proposal
Plans for a new village hall have been met with criticism after it was argued works could cause “disastrous consequences” to houses.
Jim Rush, of Mount View, Muston, alleges the Village Hall Committee’s application for a new facility could result in “subsisdence” to nearby homes.
Because Mount View was built on a sand foundation, any excavation or heavy plant work could damage the houses there, says Mr Rush.
In his letter of objection Mr Rush said a similar application for a new hall was rejected in 1950.
He added: “These plans were refused because of water ingress from the land directly behind the village, where once a large lake was situated.
“There is now a large pond area in its place.
“The land then and now is still deemed volatile, unsafe terrain.
“I personally have a constant flow of water that ingresses into my garage from the present village hall land.”
But Muston Village Hall Committee say the proposed development would make it easier for parents with small children, as well as people with mobility problems, to access the facility.
A statement on behalf of the committee reads: “The existing village hall does have a vehicular access which is narrow and two cars cannot pass - this leads up to a car park at the rear of the building.
“There is a stepped path at the front of the building which makes it almost impossible for people with mobility problems or parents with small children to access the hall unless they use the road to the side.”
The application is pending consideration by Scarborough Borough Council.
